Individual hands-on lessons are available here at the Pottery at Searchwell, as well as week long pottery retreats.

Pottery lessons allow adult students of all skill levels to experience the joy of clay for the first time or to learn more advanced techniques in a supportive and inspirational environment. Hands-on throwing lessons can be tailored to meet the individual student's needs and may include techniques such as handle pulling and attachment, lidded forms, teapot construction, trimming finished forms or any other techniques students desire. Not only are throwing techniques introduced, but an emphasis is placed on encouraging students to use the clay as a medium for creative self expression and boosting confidence in making pottery. Fees include clay and bisque firings. Anything from an hour long lesson to a four week session are available.

Individual potters are welcome to join us for longer amounts of time and who are interested in furthering their understanding and exploration of the entire wood-fire salt glaze process. These pottery retreats in our historic home and studio include private accommodations, meals, and clay. We will teach daily and pass on our skills, if desired. The focus of the retreat will depend upon the potters wants and will offer a rare and unique opportunity to explore the making of pottery or to develop individual work in a relaxed and inspirational setting. Potters may also plan to join us at the end of their stay to participate and enjoy the firing of their pottery in our wood salt kiln. Our location set in the rolling landscapes of western Maryland offers a peaceful, rural environment with easy access to Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
